I Samuel 16:7b - “For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”
The other day I took my three boys to a Subway restaurant. We sat down to eat our meal, and a large lady came by and ordered her meal. She was standing in front of us by the counter. As she was telling the employee what she wanted on her sandwich, my middle son Petey made an embarrassing comment. As she turned around to glare at me (not Petey), I realized Petey and his words and actions were a representation of me. In the same way, others will develop an opinion of Christ because of our words and actions as well as our appearance.
Some feel that their outward appearance should not be important because it is really what is inside that counts. I do agree that our heart condition is more important than our appearance, but I also am convinced that our appearance should be a priority. If we are not attracted to the packaging of a certain product, then we probably will not buy that product. If someone is offended or turned off by our appearances, then they probably will not want to see what is inside of us.
People do and will continue to judge us by our appearance, just as we judge others by their appearance. I believe if Jesus were here today in my presence, He would be dressed appropriately and be sharply groomed. I believe He would take the time to match His clothes and comb His hair. He would press His clothes and wear clothes that fit Him. He wouldn't be dressed sloppily or wear His tie four inches too short. He would dress appropriately for the activity in which He was to participate. We don't necessarily have to spend more money to look sharp. We just have to want to be a good representative of Christ. We are walking billboards for Christ and Christianity. What kind of an advertisement are you for a God who wants all things done decently and in order? (I Corinthians 14:40)
