My husband and I took a very small church in May of 1999. At that time I was the only nursery worker our church had. There were rarely children present every Sunday, but once a faithful family that had children began attending, I worked in the nursery regularly. I was the nursery director for about 7 yrs before that job was handed to another of our faithful ladies in the church.
But I continue to work in the nursery! I believe that the many hours I have sat in the nursery with children under four years old has afforded me much time to dwell on the purpose of what I was doing. Yes, it is very important to run a nursery to keep down distractions in the service, but my thoughts go a little deeper.
I remember back to when I myself was a child in the church nursery. I was maybe 3 or 4 years old when we first stepped foot into the church that we became faithful members of. I loved it and loved learning everything those dear Christian ladies taught, me. (I particularly remember asking if they had any dolls the first time we visited!)
Now that I am a Mom and Pastor's wife in my 30's I can look back to those days in the nursery and see where the foundation of my Christian life began. In the nursery!
This is one reason I view my job as a nursery worker as so very important. God has given me the opportunity to build some of the first pieces on the foundations of these future Christians and servants of God. They are not just babies and children in the 'terrible two's' stage. They are future adults.
I would hope that every child in our nursery will someday grow to be important adults in our society. I would like to see them choosing to serve God with their lives. These things cannot be done by any Christian without a foundation to stand on. The truths of Jesus Christ and the Bible are vital, even to our little ones in the nursery.
Of course most of what is in the Bible is far beyond their comprehension, but every child can learn about Jesus and his love for them, and there is no foundational truth more important to mankind than the love of Jesus! What an important and rewarding opportunity to serve God in the nursery!
